Aside from the beautiful skyline, the amazing waterfront, and the world renowned lakes, under the city lights, the dangers of Detroit get real. From street gangs to cold-blooded murder, illness to old age, Detroit is the United States’ deadliest city.

According to data released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, lawstreetmedia.com states that the motor city tops the list of America’s Most Dangerous Cities for the fourth straight year thanks to a stubborn problem; gang violence. Violent crimes (which include murder, aggravated assault, robbery, rape, larceny/theft ($500+), motor-vehicle theft, and burglary.) fell 10% last year, but are still running five times that of the national average. With a population of almost 700,000, Detroit has nearly 15,000 violent crimes per year or roughly 2,137 violent crimes for every 100,000 residents. In retrospect, that’s 41 violent crimes a day   Children are dying in Detroit at a greater rate than any other U.S. city as well. Bundoo.com states that the main reason Detroit is the worst city to raise children in is because of gangs. Even if gang violence wasn’t an issue for children in Detroit, babies born here suffer from greater-than-average health risks from the moment they’re conceived due to the staggering prematurity rate. In 2010, Detroit and Cleveland were tied for the highest infant mortality rate at about 14 deaths per every 1,000 infants according to The Huffington Post.

Detroit’s high violent crime rate is likely tied to the few opportunities the dismal economic climate provides. Nearly 40% of city residents live in poverty, and 12.4% of the workforce was unemployed as of 2016, each the highest share of any major U.S. city according to forbes.com.
